INSTITUT DE RECHERCHE MATHEMATIQUE DE RENNES

The Rennes group is very active in the field of algorithms for real algebraic geometry and polynomial system solving, both from a theoretical point of view and for the development of efficient software. The leader of the group, Marie-Francoise Coste-Roye, is one of the authors of the definitive monograph on the subject. In her capacity as head of the mathematics committee of the CNRS she instigated a recent study into computer algebra in France which was published in April 1995.

Another member of the team, Fabrice Rouiller, was the prime author of the real solver produced by the PoSSo project. This used a synthesis of symbolic techniques and high-precision numerics to produce extremely accurate results. The Rennes group also produced a report on the state-of-the-art in polynomial solvers as one of the deliverables of the PoSSo project.

The group maintains close contacts with the other two major French groups doing research into algorithms: Lazard's team in Paris and Duval's team in Limoges. Its role within FRISCO will be to coordinate the "Algorithms and Library" work package, as well as conduct the bulk of the research in this area.
