Professor Maurice Cox

Maurice Cox has been associated with the Numerical Algorithms Group since its inception. He has authored or co-authored many routines in the Curve and Surface Fitting chapter of the NAG Library for polynomial and spline interpolation and approximation, and routines in the Linear Equations chapter for variable bandwidth Cholesky decomposition.

For 45 years he has been involved in many aspects of numerical computing, with particular interests in polynomial and spline approximation in one or more variables, structured linear algebra and floating-point error analysis. In recent years, he has turned his attention to measurement modelling and uncertainty evaluation, a key topic in metrology and the core business of the National Physical Laboratory (NPL), where he has worked for over 35 years, following a period in industry.

Professor Cox is a Senior NPL Fellow, where he manages three projects in the DTI Software Support for Metrology (SSfM) programme. His current responsibilities are predominantly in developing and promoting objective approaches to uncertainty evaluation. He sits on national, European and international standards committees in this area. He is closely involved with NAG on collaborative work as part of the SSfM programme.

He is visiting professor in computational mathematics at Kingston University. He has co-authored proceedings in the Algorithms for Approximation conference series and the Advanced Mathematical and Computational Tools for Metrology series. He organised the international conference in memory of Jim Wilkinson, co-editing the proceedings with Sven Hammarling of NAG. He has been a member of the NAG Technical Policy Committee for 15 years.

Maurice Cox presented the NAG AGM 2003 lecture Mathematics in Support of Measurement and an invited talk NAG and NPL over the Years at the Brian Ford Retirement Technical Meeting.
