NAGWare Fortran Tools Release 4.0

1. Introduction

The product NQUX140NA contains six implementations of the NAGWare Fortran
Tools Release 4.0.  The implementations are in separate distribution
directories as shown in the table below.  Single-machine implementations
are available on tape cartridge or from the Internet, in which case only
one distribution directory will be present.

2. Installation

(1) From CD:
    Connect to the distribution directory on the CD and type INSTALL, e.g.

        cd /cdrom/NAGWare_tools-sparc
        INSTALL

(2) From tape:
    Read the distribution directory into an area with sufficient space.
    Connect to the distribution directory and type INSTALL, e.g.

        tar xf /dev/rmt0 NAGWare_tools-sparc
        cd NAGWare_tools-sparc
        INSTALL

(3) From an internet distribution:
    Unpack the gzipped tar file into an area with sufficient space and
    install as per the tape distribution, e.g.

        gunzip <NAGWare_tools-sparc.tgz | tar xf -
        cd NAGWare_tools-sparc
        INSTALL

(4) To run directly from the CD or distribution directory:
    First connect to the distribution directory. Two scripts
    (CDRUN.csh and CDRUN.sh) are provided to set the environment
    only for the shell from which they are invoked. These must
    be run in the current shell environment as shown below:

    In the C shell, for example:

        cd /cdrom/NAGWare_tools-sparc
        source CDRUN.csh

    In the Bourne or Korn shells, for example:

        cd /cdrom/NAGWare_tools-sparc
        . CDRUN.sh

    This facility is intended to allow tools trials to be run
    without installation.
 
The installer should then ensure that users are given suitable advice for
accessing the tools, e.g.

    The tool scripts are installed in the directory
    /usr/local/bin. Users should include this directory in their
    PATH environment variable.

    The example programs from the Tutorial chapters in the
    NAGWare Fortran Tools Users' Manual may be found in the
    directories /usr/local/lib/NAGWare/f77_tools/examples and
    /usr/local/lib/NAGWare/f95_tools/examples.

3. Testing

Where full file path names are quoted it is assumed that materials have been
installed into the default directories.

3.1. NAGWare f95 Tools Command Line Interface

A script is provided to test the NAGWare f95 Tools command line interface
using the tutorial examples for each tool.

Ensure that the NAGWare Fortran Tools scripts directory is on your PATH and
that the environment variables NAG_F90_TOOLS and NAG_F95_TOOLS are not
set. Then create a new directory for this test, change to this directory
and execute the /usr/local/lib/NAGWare/f95_tools/test/f95_test_installation
script. If the tools library files are installed to the standard place
(/usr/local/lib), the script will find the examples and copy them to this
directory, otherwise the script will prompt for the location of the library
files.

The f95_test_installation script will print OK for each tool if the tool is
correctly installed and produces the expected ouput.

3.2. NAGWare f95 Tools GUI Interface

This section shows how to test the installation of the NAGWare f95 Tools using
the GUI interface.

If you have not already done so set the appropriate X resources for the
Tools, e.g.

xrdb -merge /usr/local/lib/NAGWare/tk_lib/Xresources.colour

Ensure that the NAGWare Fortran Tools scripts directory is on your
PATH and that the environment variables NAGWARE_TK_LIB, NAG_F90_TOOLS
and NAG_F95_TOOLS are not set, and change directory to a suitable
place for testing. Copy the example program file prest.f90 from
/usr/local/lib/NAGWare/f95_tools/examples to this directory, e.g.

cp /usr/local/lib/NAGWare/f95_tools/examples/prest.f90 .

Now start the NAGWare f95 Tools GUI nag_f95, run the GUI in the background, as
you may wish to type other commands in the terminal window.

Next test the help system by clicking on the Help menu button. Select NAGWare
f95 Tools from the menu which should display the nagware_f95_tools.help
file. Check that the hypertext links cause the appropriate help files to be
displayed in separate windows. If all is working dismiss the help windows.

Select "Select file" from the "File" menu. The directory browser will display
the file name "prest.f90" and any other files that match the filter wildcard
expression. Double click on "prest.f90"; the directory browser will disappear
and the file name "prest.f90" will appear in the "File:" box in the top right
below the menu bar.

Select the tool "nag_prest95" from the "Tool" menu. Select "Process" from the
"File" menu and the tool will be run. Information on tool progress and warning
messages will appear in the largest box. On colour monitors, "Processing:
prest.f90" should be highlighted with a yellow background. If the colour
highlighting does not appear, the X resources have not been set; fix this and
restart the Tools.

Return to the Tools window and select "View" from the "File" menu. This will
display a large window with the file "prest.f90.original" on the left and
"prest.f90" on the right. The font for this window is controlled by the X
resource:

nag_f95*splitwin_font: -misc-*-medium-*-*-*-*-120-*-*-*-60-*-*

This font has been carefully selected to give a fixed space font that displays
two 75 character lines side by side on typical workstation monitors. If this
font is unavailable or for any reason unsuitable, select a suitable font to
replace the above, change the /usr/local/lib/NAGWare/tk_lib/Xresources.* files
and amend the information in the GUI man page (/usr/local/man/man1/nag_f95.1)
and the nag_f95 help file (/usr/local/lib/NAGWare/tk_lib/nag_f95.help). If it
is necessary to experiment with this font, please note that you must run a
tool (e.g. nag_prest95) before the file viewer will display two files side by
side.

You have now tested the main features of the f95 Tools. If required, the tool
options and polish options editor may be explored using further files from the
/usr/local/lib/NAGWare/f95_tools/examples directory. Check the Tutorial
chapter in the NAGWare Fortran Tools Users' Manual for examples of options to
use and the expected output files.

3.3. NAGWare f77 Tools Command Line Interface

A script is provided to test the NAGWare f77 Tools command line interface
using the tutorial examples for each tool.

Ensure that the NAGWare Fortran Tools scripts directory is on your PATH and
that the environment variable NAG_F77_TOOLS is not set.  Then create a new
directory for this test, change to this directory and execute the
/usr/local/lib/NAGWare/f77_tools/test/f77_test_installation script. If the
tools library files are installed to the standard place (/usr/local/lib),
the script will find the examples and copy them to this directory,
otherwise the script will prompt for the location of the library files.

The f77_test_installation script will print OK for each tool if
the tool is correctly installed and produces the expected ouput.

3.4. NAGWare f77 to f90 Converter GUI

This section shows how to test the installation of the NAGWare f77 to f90
Converter.

If you have not already done so set the appropriate X resources for the
Tools, e.g.

xrdb -merge /usr/local/lib/NAGWare/tk_lib/Xresources.colour

Ensure that the NAGWare Fortran Tools scripts directory is on your
PATH and that the environment variables NAGWARE_TK_LIB, NAG_F77_TOOLS,
NAG_F90_TOOLS and NAG_F95_TOOLS are not set, and change directory to a
suitable place for testing. Copy the example program file input.f from
/usr/local/lib/NAGWare/converter/examples to this directory and change
the file permissions to give write access, e.g.

cp /usr/local/lib/NAGWare/converter/examples/input.f .
chmod 644 input.f

Start the NAGWare f77 to f90 Converter nag_77to90, run the GUI in the
background, as you may wish to type other commands in the terminal window.

Next test the help system by clicking on the Help menu button. Select NAGWare
f77 to f90 Converter from the menu which should display the nagware.help
file. Check that the four tools' hypertext links cause the appropriate help
files to be displayed in separate windows.

If all is working well dismiss the help windows.

Select "Select file" from the "File" menu. The directory browser will display
the file name "input.f". Double click on "input.f", the directory browser will
disappear and the file name "input.f" will appear in the "File:" box in the
top right below the menu bar.

Select "Process" and the default tool nag_pfort will be run. Information on
tool progress, warnings and error messages will appear in the largest box. On
colour monitors, "Processing: input.f" should be highlighted with a yellow
background and the word "Error:" in "Error: Invalid data type for ..." should
be highlighted with a red background. There should be six such error
messages. If the colour highlighting does not appear, the X resources have not
been set. Fix this and restart the Converter.

Next nag_decs, nag_struct and nag_prest95 should be run in turn, with default
options. Select "nag_decs" from the "Tool" menu, then process from the "File"
menu. Minimal tool progress messages are displayed. Next, select "nag_struct"
and "Process". This time a dialogue box appears with the question "Backup file
"input.f.original" exists".  Select "Retain existing backup". Again minimal
tool progress messages are displayed.

Now run the last tool in the sequence by selecting "nag_prest95" and
"Process". Tool progress messages and a warning about mixed precision appear.

Do not exit the Converter. Go to the terminal window and difference the output
file from the last step "input.f90" with the supplied file
"/usr/local/lib/NAGWare/converter/results/expected_output.f90", e.g.

diff input.f90 /usr/local/lib/NAGWare/converter/results/expected_output.f90

The files should be identical; if not, check that none of the tool options
has been changed and that there is no polish options file set. If necessary,
remove "input.f" and "input.f90" and start again from the beginning".

Return to the Converter window and select "View" from the "File" menu. This
will display a large window with the file "input.f" on the left and
"input.f90" on the right. The width of each half window is 75 characters, and
three lines in "input.f90" exceed this. The horizontal scroll bar may be used
to reveal the extreme right of these lines. The font for this window is
controlled by the X resource:

tool (for example nag_prest95) before the file viewer will display two files
side by side.

You have now tested the main features of the Converter. If required, the tool
options and polish options editor may be explored. Please note that the polish
options editor is only active when nag_prest95 is selected.

4. Machine-specific Details

Details of the product specific to each machine are given below.  The products
were tested on the specified operating system version and so should work on
fully compatible later releases of the operating system.  The quoted space
requirements do not include that needed for licensing purposes.  The licensing
materials (in the license directory) occupy approximately 15.8 Mb, but most of
this will not be needed; approximately 0.9 - 3.0 Mb will be required, depending
on which platform has been chosen as the licence server.  Details are also
given as to whether 64-bit integers and 128-bit reals are supported.
