NAGWare Fortran Tools Release 4.1

1. Introduction

The product NQUX141NA contains six implementations of the NAGWare Fortran
Tools Release 4.1.  The implementations are in separate distribution
directories as shown in the table below.  Single-machine implementations
are available on CD or from the Internet, in which case only one distribution 
directory will be present.

2. Installation

(1) From CD:
    Connect to the distribution directory on the CD and type CDINSTALL.
    E.g.
        cd /cdrom/NAGWare_tools-sparc
        CDINSTALL

(2) From an internet distribution:
    Unpack the gzipped tar file into an area with sufficient space.
    Connect to the distribution directory and type INSTALL, e.g.

        gunzip <NAGWare_tools-sparc.tgz | tar xf -
        cd NAGWare_tools-sparc
        INSTALL

(3) To run directly from the CD or distribution directory:
    First connect to the distribution directory. Some scripts will have 
    to be created somewhere on your system - this will be done by the 
    CDRUN script. Once run, remember to set your PATH environment variable
    to point to the directory where you have created the scripts. 

The installer should then ensure that users are given suitable advice for
accessing the tools, e.g.

    The tool binaries are installed in the directory
    /usr/local/bin (or another directory if specified during the install
    process). Users should include this directory in their
    PATH environment variable.

    The example programs from the Tutorial chapters in the
    NAGWare Fortran Tools Users' Manual may be found in the
    directories /usr/local/lib/NAGWare/examples/f77tools and
    /usr/local/lib/NAGWare/examples/f95tools (or in an alternative directory
    if specified during the install).

The INSTALL, CDINSTALL and CDRUN scripts create a script called
UNINSTALL_NAGWare_Tools in the binary directory which may be used to
remove the NAGWare Fortran Tools files, if required.

3. Testing

Where full file path names are quoted it is assumed that materials have been
installed into the default directories.

3.1 NAGWare Tools Command Line Interface

A script is provided to test the NAGWare Tools command line interface
using the tutorial examples for each tool.

Ensure that the NAGWare Fortran Tools scripts directory is on your PATH. 
Then create a new directory for this test, change to this directory
and execute the /usr/local/lib/NAGWare/ftools/test/tools_installation_test
script. If the tools library files are installed to the standard place
(/usr/local/lib/NAGWare), the script will find the examples and copy them to
this directory, otherwise the script will prompt for the location of the
library files.

The tools_installation_test script will print OK for each tool if the tool is
correctly installed and produces the expected output.


3.2 NAGWare Fortran Tools GUI Interface

This section shows how to test the installation of the NAGWare Fortran Tools
using the GUI interface.

If you have not already done so set the appropriate X resources for the
Tools, e.g.

xrdb -merge /usr/local/lib/NAGWare/guilib/Xresources.colour

Ensure that the NAGWare Fortran Tools binaries directory is on your
PATH and change directory to a suitable place for testing. Copy the example
program file prest.f90 from /usr/local/lib/NAGWare/examples/f95tools to
this directory, e.g. 

cp /usr/local/lib/NAGWare/examples/f95tools/prest.f90 .

Now start the NAGWare Fortran Tools GUI nag_tools, run the GUI in the
background, as you may wish to type other commands in the terminal window.

Next test the help system by clicking on the Help menu button. Select NAGWare
Fortran Tools from the menu which should display the nag_tools.html
file. Check that the hypertext links cause the appropriate html files to be 
displayed. If all is working dismiss the html window.

Select "Select file" from the "File" menu. The directory browser will display
the file name "prest.f90" and any other files that match the filter wildcard
expression. Double click on "prest.f90"; the directory browser will disappear
and the file name "prest.f90" will appear in the "File:" box in the top right
below the menu bar.

Select the tool "Precision Standardiser" from the "Tool" menu. Select
"Process" from the "File" menu and the tool will be run. Information on tool
progress and warning messages will appear in the largest box. On colour
monitors, "Processing: prest.f90" should be highlighted with a yellow
background. If the colour highlighting does not appear, the X resources have
not been set; fix this and restart the Tools. 

Return to the Tools window and select "View" from the "File" menu. This will
display a large window with the file "prest.f90.original" on the left and
"prest.f90" on the right. The font for this window is controlled by the X
resource:

nag_tools*splitwin_font: -misc-*-medium-*-*-*-*-120-*-*-*-60-*-*

This font has been carefully selected to give a fixed space font that displays
two 75 character lines side by side on typical workstation monitors. If this
font is unavailable or for any reason unsuitable, select a suitable font to
replace the above, change the /usr/local/lib/NAGWare/guilib/Xresources.* files
and amend the information in the GUI man page (/usr/local/man/man1/nag_tools.1)
and the nag_tool html file (/usr/local/lib/NAGWare/guilib/nag_tools.html).
If it is necessary to experiment with this font, please note that you must
run a tool (e.g. Precision Standardiser) before the file viewer will display
two files side by side.  Please note that changes to the supplied
resources may need to be applied to the entries for all four GUIs.

You have now tested the main features of the Fortran Tools. If required, the tool
options and polish options editor may be explored using further files from the
/usr/local/lib/NAGWare/examples/f95tools directory. Check the Tutorial
chapter in the NAGWare Fortran Tools Users' Manual for examples of options to
use and the expected output files.

In addition a self running demonstration of the NAGWare Fortran Tools
is supplied.  This features some of the tutorial examples from the
manual and other demonstration material.  It consists of the nag_tools
GUI linked with an extra module that runs the tool demonstration
automatically under user control, invoking the tools to carry out
typical processing of small Fortran files and displaying the results
and a commentary on what is being done and how to do it.

The demonstration serves as an aid to familiarising yourself with the tools
and how to use them via the GUI.  Also it may be used as a test of the
GUI and the tools set up.

To run the demonstration, ensure that the NAGWare Fortran Tools
binaries directory is on your PATH and invoke nag_tools_demo.  If
running this for testing a new installation, we recommend selecting
"NAGWare f95 Tools" and "NAGWare f77 Tools" as there is little point
in running the "f77 to f95 Conversion Tools" demonstration as all the
tools in that demonstration are covered by the other two.

4. Machine-specific Details

Details of the product specific to each machine are given below.  The products
were tested on the specified operating system version and so should work on
fully compatible later releases of the operating system.  The quoted space
requirements do not include that needed for licensing purposes.  The licensing
materials (in the license directory) occupy approximately 10.5 MB, but most of
this will not be needed; approximately 1.0 - 1.6 MB will be required, depending
on which platform has been chosen as the licence server.  Details are also
given as to whether 64-bit integers and 128-bit reals are supported.
