Attacking the HPC skills need: NAG Supercomputing Support Service passes milestone of 2000 course attendees

SC13, Denver, USA | 17 - 22 November 2013 | Booth #1716

The Numerical Algorithms Group (NAG), global HPC services and numerical software provider, has announced the latest milestone in addressing the skills needs of the scientific computing community with the skills they require to effectively exploit HPC systems. A fundamental requirement for attaining the best science, engineering or other research output from high performance computing is that users and programmers have the skills required to use the technology. NAG's range of HPC Services offerings are designed to solve this challenge. NAG is pleased to reveal that over 2000 attendees have now benefitted from NAG's highly rated HPC training courses under the UK's national Computational Support and Engineering (CSE) Support Service.

NAG has operated the UK's national CSE Support Service as a core part of the HECToR supercomputing service since 2006. This service provides support for application performance and capability enhancements, along with HPC training, to UK users of HPC facilities. The training courses under the program have consistently seen strong demand and have been rated highly by the attendees. NAG has so far offered 26 different courses at 23 locations totalling 350 days of training. Individuals benefitting from NAG's HPC training have come from over 50 institutions.

Attendees of the courses have said:

  • "Excellent course, well delivered by knowledgeable and affable staff. Enjoyed the week very much!"
  • "The way that [NAG] has approached training is probably the high point of the [HECToR] service."
  • "Fantastic courses, well organized, superb lecturers. I highly recommend them to people. Great job!"

NAG's HPC training programs include courses for programmers (covering Fortran, MPI, OpenMP, CUDA, OpenCL, debugging, performance, scalability, etc.); users (hands on use of supercomputers and batch systems, etc.); and managers (HPC procurement, etc.).

In addition to these HPC training programs, NAG also provides a range of consulting and services options to help industry and academia address the HPC skills gap. These range from impartial advice on HPC service strategy and technology; to focused application software performance projects; to multi-person-year HPC application support and innovation services.
