JTC1/SC22/WG5
Revision of ISO/IEC 1539-1:2004
(Information technology - Programming languages - Fortran)
Fortran 2003 (which is Part 1 of the multi-part Fortran Standard) is a major enhancement of Fortran 95 Standard.
WG5 is currently working on a minor revision of the language, with a target publication date of 2008. The current working draft can be
accessed from the J3 file server as standing document 007 in a variety of formats.
It will include the feature defined by the Technical Report:
- ISO/IEC TR 19767:2005(E) Enhanced module facilities
whose final draft is visible as
N1602.
This was written as a Technical Report because the feature was deemed too
important to wait for the next revision of the Standard.
The major new features that are planned are:
- 1. Parallel programming support: SPMD parallel programming using co-arrays for
data exchange
- 2. A BITS data type for non-numeric programming and enhanced handling of binary,
octal, and hexadecimal constantsFeatures to allow object oriented programs
to be written in Fortran
- 3. Scoped macros which can generate whole Fortran statements and subprograms
In addition, there are a considerable number of minor technical enhancements.
