Software Porting Engineer

The Numerical Algorithms Group Limited (NAG) is the world leader in high quality software for numerical and statistical applications. We currently have a vacancy for the following position:

Software Porting Engineer

Are you a proficient programmer with experience in making code perform on multiple platforms? If so, you may be the person we’re looking for to join our Development Division which is responsible for:

  • Product development and support
  • Consultancy work for third party clients
  • Collaborative research with partners in industry and academia

You would be part of the group responsible for porting, testing and certification of NAG products. (This entails moving the code from the development environment to the final production platform, ready to be shipped to our customers.) Your principal tasks would include:

  • Porting of NAG products to a variety of computing platforms
  • Carrying out testing and quality assurance of completed products
  • Assisting in packaging of final release materials to be sent to users
  • Provision of technical support for the installation and use of NAG products
  • Assisting in other porting-related activities, including the drafting and maintenance of standards and reports relating to product porting and testing

You should have a technical computing background on a variety of platforms, particularly Linux and Windows, and programming experience in a high level language (such as C or Fortran). Experience with Mac OS X would be an advantage. Knowledge of build system tools such as “make” would be useful. The ability to appreciate customer requirements for ease of installation and use is essential, and experience with software installation and licensing mechanisms would be an advantage. You should demonstrate a good grasp of basic mathematics (e.g. a scientific, computer science or software engineering degree), but numerical analysis qualifications are not required.

You would be working within a team environment, so the ability to work constructively and cooperatively with colleagues is essential. Good written and verbal communication skills are required, as is flexibility. In addition, you would be expected to show attention to detail, be patient and persistent and demonstrate a logical approach to problem solving. In summary, we are looking for someone with the ability to make software work on a variety of platforms.

The post will be based at NAG's offices in Oxford. Starting salary would typically be within the NAG Grade 2 salary scale (£27,700 – £33,370) but may be within the NAG Grade 3 scale (£33,370 – £39,058) depending on qualifications and experience, with six weeks holiday per year, free health insurance, and the opportunity to join the USS defined-benefit pension scheme.

Applicants should state clearly that they are currently eligible to work in the United Kingdom without obtaining any additional permit or authorisation. All applications must come directly from the candidate; NAG does not deal with agencies.

NAG has recently been awarded Investors in People Gold status.
